British government involvement in Fergal McCusker inquest ‘concerning and disgraceful’ – Finucane

Sinn Féin MP John Finucane has said it is deeply concerning that the British Secretary of State has intervened in the inquest into the murder of Fergal McCusker in 1998.

The North Belfast MP said, “It is deeply concerning and disgraceful to learn that the British Secretary of State recently intervened during the inquest of Fergal McCusker.

“This is highly unprecedented and is yet another cynical attempt by the British government to run the clock down until the shameful Legacy Act becomes law.

“It is essential that our judicial processes are free to carry out their duties independently, free from state interference.

“The cruel Legacy Act has incentivised state bodies to run down the clock and to deny any form of truth and justice to families even before the act becomes law.

“Sinn Féin will continue to stand with all families as they challenge this cruel and cynical law, and as they continue to campaign with dignity and determination for truth and justice.

“This act must be repealed as the rationale for introducing it is clearly illustrated in this latest attempt to politically deny families truth and justice.”
