Establishing European Union office in Belfast as resource for businesses ‘logical step’

Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has said establishing a European Union office in Belfast as a resource for businesses is the next logical step to take.

Speaking in the Assembly today Declan Kearney said, “It is an established matter of fact that Brexit has been an economic, political, and social disaster for citizens and businesses here; and even in Britain.

“Since its imposition, Sinn Féin, other parties, the Irish government, and the EU have sought to mitigate Brexit’s worst impacts.

“While the regional economy continues to grow because of dual market access, our businesses have identified challenges brought about by Brexit itself and they are asking us to do more to help them navigate their new trading realities.

“Our collective focus should be on identifying pragmatic and practical solutions to address the challenges associated with the post Brexit trading context.

“That extends to technical issues which our businesses have identified as they navigate the new trade, investment and regulatory arrangements.

“The recent Murphy review concluded that a ‘one stop shop’, to simplify administrative processes would be an advantage.

“That recommendation should be implemented.

“Establishing a European Union office in Belfast, as a resource for businesses, is the next logical step to take.”
