The time to plan and prepare for unity is now

Sinn Féin MLA, Declan Kearney said the outcome of last week’s elections in Britain underlines the growing demand for constitutional change and the need to prepare for Irish unity

Speaking in the Assembly, the party’s National chairperson said: “The recent election results across Wales, Scotland and England reflect significant political change in the landscape of those countries.

“The growing support for progressive politics, self-determination, and constitutional change, should serve as a wake-up call for the British Government.

“The fallout from Brexit continues to reshape politics across these islands.

“Increasing numbers of people in Wales, Scotland and the north of Ireland recognise that Westminster does not represent their interests.

“The choice is clear: more political chaos, austerity and the rise of the far right, or a new future based on democratic change and self-determination.”

Continuing the South Antrim MLA said:
“The right to a referendum on Irish unity is set out in the Good Friday Agreement, and there is now an urgent need to plan and prepare for constitutional change.

“The Irish Government should demonstrate the leadership which is required. It should establish a Citizens’ Assembly and prepare a Green Paper on constitutional change, and
engage directly with the British Government on developing a structured transitional process towards Irish unity.

“The time to plan and prepare for unity is now.”
